JWST 23200: Jews in Film and Fiction: Citing Your Sources

When to Use Citations

You must use citations when:

  • You use a direct quote from a resource.
  • You paraphrase a sentence or paragraph from a source.
  • You use an IDEA from a source that is not common knowledge*.

When in doubt, cite it!

*common knowledge n.

Any proposition ( 1 ) that every member of a specified group knows to be true, knows that every other member knows to be true, knows that every other member knows that every other member knows to be true, and so on...

Managing and Formatting Citations

Citation management software allows a user to organize and retrieve information, such as citations for books, articles, and web sites, by linking to library databases. The citation manager then works with word processing software to insert properly formatted footnotes or citations into a paper and create a properly formatted bibliography.
